PRECISION LASER WELDING
STONE REPLACEMENT AND NEW SETTINGS
We use both traditional torch with solder welding and the laser
welder for the best choice when repairing your fine jewelry.
A torch uses heat and heat can be harmful to fragile stones.
A. A torch uses solder to join two metals. The joint is not as strong as it
was before it was cut for sizing.
B. When using a torch, the solder joint (especially white gold and platinum)
can, and often does show a "seam" where the work was done. This seam
can become apparent later as the shine wears off the ring.
C. A laser welder uses the same type of metal to size the ring, not solder.
D. The ring will not show a seam.
E. The joint is stronger than a solder joint. It's almost as though the ring
had never been cut.
F. Since there is no heat used, there is no "softening" of the ring structure
nor is there a chance of damage to nearby stones.
G. To perform jewelry repair using a Laser Machine is more costly because
of several things:
1. The Laser Machine is approximately $30,000 in cost.
2. The jeweler/operator is specially trained in its use.
